Who was Lord Desborough?

William Henry Grenfell, 1st Baron Desborough (1855–1945), was one of Britain's most versatile sportsmen. A rare figure who competed at the highest level in rowing, fencing, and athletics. He rowed for Oxford in the Boat Race (including the only dead heat ever, in 1877), won an Olympic silver for Great Britain in team épée at the 1906 Games, and in 1908 presided over the London Olympics. Off the water and the piste, he served his country as an MP, as President of the Thames Conservancy for 32 years, and as the first captain of Maidenhead Rowing Club. Our lodge takes his name because his life captures what we stand for: sport, service, and community, pursued with passion and without pretension.

Lodge meetings feature short ceremonies — think of them as one-act plays that teach lessons about personal growth, equality, and charity. They're rooted in 300 years of tradition. After the ceremony, everyone sits down together for dinner. It's social, relaxed, and good fun.

This lodge is open to men aged 18+. For women interested in Freemasonry, two long-established women's Grand Lodges exist: the Order of Women Freemasons (owf.org.uk) and the Honourable Fraternity of Ancient Freemasons (hfaf.org).

How much time does it involve?

The lodge meets a few times a year. Social events and sporting activities are optional — fit in as much or as little as suits you.
